Yuriy Fedkovych Chernivtsi National University an kafa ta ne a 1875 a matsayin Franz-Josephs-Universität Czernowitz.  jami'ar ta kasance babbar makarantar koyar da ilimi ta Romania har zuwa lokacin da aka sake hade Arewacin Bukovina tare da Ukraine a 1940 lokacin da aka amince da ita a matsayin babbar jami'ar ilimi a Ukraine. A cikin 1989 sunanta ya canza zuwa abin da aka sani da shi a yau kuma a cikin 2000 an ayyana ta a matsayin Jami'ar Kasa.
